Palworld has an elemental system where some Pals are more effective against others of a different type. This system dictates how much damage your Pals can dish out even when under-leveled and is the core of Palworld’s combat encounters. When starting out, you’re responsible for fighting and weakening the Pals you want to capture, but as you progress through the levels and fight Alpha Pals, you’ll soon realize that your own damage won’t be enough to weaken a Pal. By understanding the elements of Palworld, you will breeze through the Palpagos Islands with the right team.
How Do Elements Interact With Each Other?
Every Pal belongs to either 1 or 2 of the following elemental subtypes: Fire, Grass, Ground, Electric, Water, Ice, Dragon, Dark, and Neutral. These elements interact with each other, each type having a strength and weakness with different elements. Defeating stronger Pals alone is difficult, even with the best gear, which is why bringing combat Pals is ideal for drawing aggro away from you and exploiting a Pal’s elemental weakness when your own weapon damage falls short.
When your Pal fights another creature that’s weak to their element, it will deal twice its base damage while the enemy Pal only deals half damage to your Pal. This means that preparation is key to winning fights. The game provides the locations of different Alpha Pals, which gives you enough information to prepare a roster that can counter the Alpha of your choice.

Dual Element Types
Some Pals have two different elements, which allows for both super-effective damage and high damage mitigation if both of that Pal’s elements are strong against the other Pal’s dual elements. For example, Chillet is an Ice/Dragon type Pal, and it fights against an Astegon with Dragon/Dark element. That Chillet counters Astegon as Chillet’s Ice element is strong against Dragon element, and Dragon element is strong against Dark element. Since effective damage deals 2x the base damage, both elements will stack to 4x base damage for Chillet. Conversely, Astegon will only deal 0.25x of its damage against Chillet.
If a Pal’s dual elements have a match-up with one strength and one weakness, they will cancel each other out, and only base damage will be dealt. An example would be a match between Vanwyrm, a Fire/Dark type, and Dinossom, a Grass/Dragon type. While Vanwyrm’s Fire counters Dinossom’s Grass, the latter’s Dragon element counters the former’s Dark element. Essentially, they cancel each other out, and neither has an advantage. Dual element Pals comprise your endgame set-up as you make your way towards the Legendary Pals. With boss raids and PvP planned soon for Palworld, utilizing elemental weaknesses becomes an even bigger requirement when reaching max level.
