Fallout 76: Obtaining The Best Named Legendary Weapons

Fallout 76: Obtaining The Best Named Legendary Weapons

Legendary weapons can increase your power ceiling with some powerful effects, like having an extra projectile per shot, exploding rounds, better V.A.T.S. critical hits, and health leech. Some weapons in Fallout 76 can be obtained as quest rewards or can drop from public events, which come with fixed effects that can further boost your DPS. With so many quests in Appalachia, it can take some time to find every quest that rewards a weapon. This guide will show you where you can earn these weapons for yourself.

Weapon Level Scaling

Before doing these quests, it is highly advisable that you reach level 50 first, as quest rewards are scaled to your character level. Some of these weapons can only be obtained once, and if you obtain them while at a lower level, you will be unable to obtain another unless you create another character and do the quests all over again. It’s important that you only seek these weapons out once you are level 50 to get their best iteration.

The Fixer Legendary Combat Rifle

This weapon has been a staple for many stealth and generalist builds. The Fixer provides a stealth bonus while crouching in shadowed areas, increases crouched movement speed, increases damage by 20%, and comes with a suppressor attachment for maximum sneaking potential.

You can get this weapon by doing the Sheepsquatch questline. To begin, head to Lewisburg, located on the western side of the Ash Heap region. Interact with any “Sheepsquatch ate my brother!” posters around town to start the quest.

Head to the Van Lowe Taxidermy shop and begin your investigation. At some point, you will pick up a Strange Bone item during the quest. Head to the basement and place the bone on the wolf head’s mouth to open a small safe that contains the password; this is for the terminal on the top floor. This starts the “Baa Baa Black Sheep” quest. Head to Bastion Park and find all the notes hidden around the park to progress. After that, head to Beckley and go to Sal’s Grinders. Find all the clues there to start “The Lowe-Down" quest.

Once again, find more notes until you are tasked to return to Van Lowe’s Taxidermy shop. Head to the basement once more and follow these instructions:

  • Set dryer heat level to “Low Heat”
  • Set the washing machine to “Delicates.”
  • Interact with the date listed as “Laundry Day” on the wall calendar

This opens up the secret laboratory. Follow the quest instructions and interact with the terminal inside. This leads to the last quest, “Wolf in Sheep’s Clothing.”

Before entering the Garrahan Estates, go to the Garrahan Mining Headquarters and find the access card inside the building, which is precisely in the CEO’s office. Once you have the card, return to the estates and access the terminal inside. This will lead you to Wolf’s Cache, which is in the car's trunk. You will finally receive The Fixer legendary combat rifle.

This weapon can also be crafted once you receive its plan. You can obtain this plan by participating in the “Encryptid” public event, but the plan only drops after you have completed the previous questline. You can sell crafted versions of this gun for around 4,000 caps in your vendor.

Steel Dawn Questline Legendaries

The Brother of Steel questline has a fair amount of named Legendary weapons and even a free suit of power armor once you finish the Steel Dawn and Steel Reign storylines.

The Oathbreaker melee weapon comes with the traits Suppressor, Power Attack, and Cavalier, which decrease enemy damage output by 25% on hit, increase power attack damage by 40% and add 40% damage resistance while power attacking. You can also obtain the Fact Finder revolver reasonably early in this quest, with its two-shot, explosive, and reduced AP cost traits.

This weapon is obtainable by completing the first half of the Brotherhood of Steel questline in Fort Atlas. To start this questline, speak to Russell Dorsey, who is stationed at the front of the fort. Afterward, speak to Knight Shin inside the fort to get started. He will ask you to speak to the wastelanders downstairs. Once you have spoken to all of them, return to Knight Shin and give your report. This will give you access to the inner areas of the fort. Speak to Scribe Valdez to get started on the next quest, “Mother of Invention.”

Follow Scribe Valdez to the fort's basement and start investigating the area. You will need to find 3 reports located on the cart just down the corridor immediately after descending the ruined staircase, by the skeletal remains near the core, and on the worktable behind the core. Be prepared at this point: a horde of mole rats will attack the basement. Fend them off and look for these 3 components (take note of the stat each requires):

  • The ion focus, which is located at the base of the machine; requires Agility 8+ to remove intact by detaching all the cables and taking out the whole thing in one go.
  • The pressure gauge, located in the upper chambers, mounted on a yellow machine; requires Strength 4+ to remove the screws and fight through the rust.
  • The CPU, located in the upper offices; requires Intelligence 8+ to perform a proper CPU ejection procedure on the terminal.

After obtaining all components, you are tasked to retrieve one more component. Be warned that obtaining the induction coil will cause robots to attack you. Fight them off, and you will complete the quest and receive The Fact Finder legendary revolver.

Speak to Paladin Rahmani to start the next quest, “Field Testing”. She will send you to Lewis & Sons Farming Supply to speak with the Putnam family. They will task you with clearing out a nest of feral ghouls. This step can lead to 2 different unique weapons: the Mind over Matter plasma pistol (+50% damage against ghouls, +25% damage while aiming, +50 Damage Resistance while aiming) or The Farmhand sledgehammer (+50% damage to Ghouls, +40% faster swing speed, +1 Endurance,) which is gained by either recruiting Colin or Marty respectively. Either way, head to the bunker of Orwell Orchards and clear the place out of feral ghouls. Return to Fort Atlas to become an official member of the Brotherhood of Steel.

For the next quest, “Disarming Discovery”, you are tasked to head to The Retreat and speak to Jennie Brown, the leader of the locals. She will tell you that a raider gang is harassing them and that they must be dealt with. After she tells you where they're located, go to Dagger’s Den, clear out the raiders outside, then head inside. You will meet Dagger, the raider leader, and you can bargain with her using Speech checks. A Strength of +12 is required to resolve the situation peacefully. Alternatively, you can attack her and retrieve the weapons by force. Pick your poison on how to deal with Dagger, then you can return to The Retreat and tell Jennie that the raider threat has been dealt with. Return to Fort Atlas and speak to Paladin Rahmani to start the next quest, “Property Rights.”

For Property Rights, you are tasked with raiding a raider base to retrieve Brotherhood supplies. Head to the makeshift vault and fight the raiders inside. Interrogate Pierce inside the vault and meet him in The Crater. There you will meet Sheena and she will ask you to place her holotape in one of the Brotherhood terminals. Do so, then return to Sheena and give her the holotape. Speak to Shin afterward to start "Supplying Demands.”

You must head to Foundation and talk to Gloria Chance in the supply room to discuss the Brotherhood supply caches. She will tell you about a weapon testing site that you should investigate. Once you find enough clues, head to Kerwood Mine, start traversing the cavern, and make your way into the room with the weapon cache (make sure to take the diving suit as most of the mine has been flooded). Take the Brotherhood supplies, return them to Gloria, and negotiate a deal between the Settlers and the BoS. Feel free to make any decision regarding the deal based on which faction your are most comfortable with. When you’re done, return to Paladin Rahmani and get started with the “Over and Out” quest.

This quest only requires that you go through the linear dungeon beneath Transmission Station 1AT-U03. Speak to SODUS, the AI managing the Enclave facility, and make your way through the dungeon. You will eventually fight SODUS as a sentry bot, so be prepared for a boss fight. After the ordeal, Paladin Rahmani and Knight Shin will ask you to pick between the two but note that there is no significant reward for picking either of them. You will receive the Oathbreaker legendary war glaive for your trouble.

For the Facebreaker, you will need to finish two more quests: “The Best Defense” and “A Knight’s Penance.” For The Best Defence, return to the Fort Atlas basement and push back the Super Mutants attacking the place. Destroy the sewer pipes the Super Mutants keep coming from with explosives. Speak to Knight Shin after that to start A Knight’s Penance. He will ask you to rally the other Initiates and will require you to rendezvous at the Uncanny Caverns location. Go inside, then follow Shin’s instructions until you find the main Super Mutant location. After this quest, you will receive the Facebreaker Power Fist.

The Final Word Legendary .50 Caliber Machinegun

Power armor builds make good use of The Final Word legendary weapon as it has +50% armor penetrations, 25% increased fire rate, and +250 damage resist while reloading. If you’re looking for a solid heavy weapon, The Final Word can do well even in the late game.

To obtain this weapon, go to the Rollins labor camp located in the central Ash Heap region. Go inside the crane and speak to Beckett. Break him out of prison by finding the key to his cell; once you free him, this will start the questline that will eventually reward you with The Final Word. Take note that Beckett will be a C.A.M.P. follower and the primary giver for this quest line. Each of his quests is short and has quest markers to guide you along. His final quest, “Thicker than Water”, will have you track down The Claw in the Watoga Underground location. Once you finish this quest, you will be rewarded with this weapon.

Whacker Smacker Legendary Super Sledge

This weapon drops from the Spin The Wheel public event. You must defend three colored statues while fighting off randomized enemy waves. At times, there are unique challenges during the event that can increase your rewards if you successfully beat them. The Whacker Smacker is a devastating melee weapon with +50% more damage when your target is below 40%, +50% limb damage, and +1 Strength, making it an economical melee weapon, especially when your ammo supplies are scarce.

Beast of Burden Public Event Uniques

This public event drops 5 named Legendary weapons: Holy Fire, Elder’s Mark, Cultist Piercer, and the Ogua Gauntlet. It's recommended that at least 4 or 5 players are present to curb the event’s difficulty. To clear this event, you must first kill cultists wearing power armor as they have the item Luca’s Explosives, which is needed to blow up marked doors. After all 8 doors are destroyed, you must gather the cargo inside and bring 20 of them to the Brahmin in the large shed. You can only carry one at a time so be patient. When you reach the quota, a legendary Ogua boss will spawn. Slay the monstrosity to complete the event and claim your reward.

Eviction Notice Public Event Uniques

For this public event, you can get either of these 6 unique weapons for every clear: Foundation's Vengeance, Tone Death, Doctor's Orders, Crowd Control, The Debilitator, and Pirate Punch. The event is simple: Repair the rad scrubber at the center of the crater, destroy six bags of meat, and defend the rad scrubber from the hordes of Super Mutants heading your way. This event is an excellent source of legendary gear since legendary Super Mutants will occasionally spawn. If you manage to defend the area for 10 minutes, and you will receive a named Legendary weapon from its pool.

Most Wanted Public Event

This event will reward either the Western Spirit lever action rifle or the Gunther’s Big Iron Western Revolver. To complete this event, go around the town set and interact with the green boxes that are found all over the set. You will gain Buckaroos, which you should deposit at the wagon in the center. After depositing 600 Buckaroos, you must defend the wagon from hostile robots within the remaining time. Make sure you leave enough time because a legendary sentry bot will spawn near the event's end; bring it down for more legendary gear.
