There are tons of animals in Minecraft that you can lure into your base and make into your livestock or pets. You can farm these creatures for resources, including meat and other crafting materials. Pigs are some livestock you can lure, farm, and breed within your base to create a stable food supply. However, you’ll need to feed them to increase their numbers. Fortunately, keeping your livestock satisfied is relatively easy.

Minecraft Pigs Overview

Pigs are abundant passive mobs in Minecraft that typically reside in grass biomes. Their primary purpose in the game is to serve as food sources, but they can also be used as mounts if you don’t have any horses. You can find them roaming the overworld, and they aren’t that hard to find. However, if you want a stable supply of pork chops, you must breed them in your base.

Where to Find Them in the Overworld

Going to Grass Biomes would be your best bet for finding pigs in Minecraft. They can’t go extinct in your world because they’ll regularly spawn in groups or individually. However, certain conditions must be met before they generate in the open. Here are the requirements for them to spawn:

  • Above Grass Blocks
  • Light Level 7
  • Not in the Snowy Plains, Meadows, or Wooded Badlands Plateaus

They can spawn in groups of one to three units so you can start your team of pigs immediately.

How to Lure Pigs to Your Base

You can lure pigs to your base by using a lead to pull them or using their favorite food. It would help if you’re near these livestock so that it’s easier to attract them to the food you’re holding. Once you bring them to your base, make sure that you set up a fence or any obstacle that can stop them from roaming and leaving.

How to Feed Pigs

Fortunately, Pigs are easy to maintain and lure because they like Carrots, Potato, and Beetroot. Carrots can be obtained in the wilderness, or you can farm them yourself. Beetroot and Potato are both farmable crops, but you can also get them from villages that have plantations. You’ll need a stable supply of these crops to keep feeding your Pigs, so be sure to find seeds for all three. Seeds are randomly dropped by harvesting these plants, so keep harvesting until you get some.

How to Breed Pigs

You can increase your number of pigs by feeding them their preferred food. It would help if you gave two adult pigs something to eat, which would make them breed with each other. It doesn’t matter if you give them differing crops as long as they’re consumed. Once they breed, they’ll spawn a piglet and will have a five-minute cooldown before you try again. Piglets will mature within 20 minutes, but you can reduce this timer by 10% by feeding them.

How to Mount Pigs

If you want to ride a pig, you need a saddle and a Carrot on a Stick. The former allows you to sit on top of the creature, while the latter lets you steer it in a specific direction. Players should note that if a pig dies via lightning, the saddle will also be destroyed.

What Do Pigs Drop

If you slay a pig, they will only drop raw pork chop. However, you will get Cooked Pork chops if you kill them with fire. The number of drops will depend on your Looting Level, which increases by one per level. You can also gain one to three LVL EXP after killing them or with a tamed wolf. However, breeding them gives you more EXP because they give one to seven LVL EXP. If a pig with a saddle is slayed, they’ll drop their saddle.
