Last Epoch: Soulfire Bastion guide

soulfire bastion

Soulfire Bastion is one of Last Epoch’s many dungeons and has its own fair share of rewards to pick from. This dungeon has a unique reward at the end of run: a vendor who is the sole source of gear with Sealed affixes in the game. While Soulfire Bastion is a rewarding experience, this activity comes with its own unique mechanics and difficulty, which some players may not immediately get. This article will guide you on how to clear Soulfire Bastion and discuss its mechanics, as well as the reward system of this dungeon.

How to Access the Soulfire Bastion Dungeon

This dungeon can be found in the Imperial Era of the main campaign. The nearest waypoint for this dungeon is at Risen Lake. Make your way to the Felled Wood area and continue until you find a massive structure at the end. Of course, you will need a dungeon key to open the door and initiate the activity, so make sure you bring a few spare keys before heading in. If you’re ever lost and you have a key, you can right click on that item to show you the exact location of the dungeon on the world map.

Soulfire Bastion can also serve as an alternate leveling path if playing on an alt character if you wish to skip a major portion of the campaign.

Dungeon Mechanics

Upon entering Soulfire Bastion proper, you will have access to a unique active skill called Soulfire Shield, which is bound to the D key by default. This skill gives you immunity to two damage types, Fire and Necrotic, which can be switched by activating the skill. Using this skill consumes a resource called Souls, which is dropped by certain enemies in the dungeon. Despite having capped resistances to Fire and Necrotic, certain enemy mechanics in the dungeon can burst down your health quickly, so you need to rely on the Soulfire Shield mechanic to avoid death.

The dungeon has fire traps that will do a lot of Fire damage, but switching the shield to Fire will alleviate the mechanic. There are four enemies to watch out for when delving into the Soulfire Bastion: The Immortal Incinerator, Searing Flesh, Possessed Construct, and Possessed Golem. The Immortal Incinerator has a beam attack that does a lot of Fire damage per second. For the first two enemies, you will need the Flame Soul Shield. The Searing Flesh has two dangerous attacks: A massive frontal cone of Fire and a circular ground slam that deals both Fire and Physical damage. As for the Necrotic Soul Shield, the Posessed Construct shoots out a tracking Necrotic Orb while the Possessed Golem blasts a bouncing Necrotic AoE attack that hits twice while also firing multiple Necrotic projectiles that inflict the Death Mark.

Each floor you clear will add a new modifier to the dungeon’s difficulty, whether by buffing enemy mobs or increasing their damage resistances. On Tier 1, starting the dungeon will not add any modifiers, but on Tier 2 and above, you will start with one. Each Tier will increase the values of those modifiers, with Tier 4 having the biggest modifier values. With risk comes reward, as each modifier adds extra items at the end of the dungeon run. Be aware that dying once in the dungeon will send you back to the start of the dungeon and expend your dungeon key, wasting it, so try not to die.

Whenever you can, kill as many enemies as you can before progressing to the next floor, as each enemy has a chance to drop a Soul. This resource will be important later once you have cleared out the dungeon. Once you have cleared the remaining floors, you will face off against the final boss of this dungeon: Fire Lich Cremorus.

Fire Lich Cremorus Bossfight Guide

The Soulfire Shield will be heavily utilized in this boss fight, especially in higher tiers, since practically all his moves inflict either Fire or Necrotic damage. When using the shield, take note of the colors of Cremorus’ attacks. If it glows green, switch to Necrotic and if it's orange, switch to Fire. Some of his deadliest moves are the following:

  • Cremorus makes the floor glow green, which deals rapid Necrotic damage. The floor will then alternate between Fire and Necrotic damage.
  • Cremorus channels a wide Fire beam that ramps up in damage.
  • Cremorus launches green and orange skulls that deal high damage and inflict Death Mark and Ignite on hit, respectively.
  • He will launch two green projectiles that deal massive Necrotic damage in an AoE.
  • Two projectiles will orbit around Cremorus, with one Fire and one Necrotic
  • Summons a wall of incoming Fire.
  • Cremorus summons a Thrall mob that will follow you and explode with Necrotic damage.

Always prioritize the damage type of the floor first as this single mechanic will almost instantly kill you if you don’t change your damage immunity on time. Cremorus only has a single phase which ramps up in difficulty due to the floor becoming increasingly covered in a damaging effect that switches between Necrotic and Fire, eventually covering the entire floor and forcing players to use their immunity to avoid damage. Cremorus is likely to cast an ability of the opposite damage type to the floor that is impossible to avoid for some builds, which forces builds to facetank his abilities. Having capped resistances for both damage types help but Cremorus can still deal heavy damage despite

Be generous with your shield application if the boss’ damage is high, as you can’t spend your Souls if you’re dead. Be aware that even if you use the right shield, the Death Mark and Ignite status effects will still go through and can still deal a hefty amount of damage, so bring a skill or item that has a Cleanse effect to prevent any further harm. If your build has any traversal skills like Fury Leap, Teleport, Transplant, Shift, or Lunge, use them to avoid Cremorus’ attacks.

After defeating Cremorus, he will drop the following Uniques and Set items:

  • Ashes of Mortality (Tier 1 and higher)
  • Lich's Envy (Tier 2 and higher)
  • Immolator's Oblation (Tier 3
  • Pyre of Affliction (Tier 4 only)

Soul Gambler Explanation

Remember those Souls you’ve been gathering all throughout the dungeon? These Souls can be turned in by an NPC known as the Soul Gambler. Saving enough souls will allow you to spend them on gambling higher rarity items. With this vendor, the lowest rarity items you can get are Rare, Exalted, Unique, and Set items. Should you reach the Soul Gambler at higher tiers, he will provide some bonuses to your purchases, like an item with a guaranteed Tier 3 sealed affix or a guaranteed Unique or Set variant of the base item you bought. It is also possible to gain an item with an Experimental affix on it, which usually only dropped by Exile Mages found within Temporal Prisons.

Soulfire Bastion is a fun alternative way of target farming for a specific Unique or getting an item with Sealed affixes if doing Monoliths of Fate is getting repetitive. If you like taking a chance for a very powerful item that belongs to your class, this is the dungeon for you.
