Once you’re at the end of the storyline, you get an Invoker or Varshan, which you can use to fight an Echo of Varshan, a replay of the boss fight. You’ll find the Echo of Varshan behind a door at the end of a few Malignant Tunnels. However, when you’ve finished the story and are on World Tier 3, your Invoker won’t work. This time, you’ll need something called a Foul Invoker of Varshan.
The Foul Invoker of Varshan is a seasonal item in Diablo 4 that you can craft, offering you the chance to encounter a new seasonal boss. But before encountering them, you’ll need to complete a few things in the game—most of which don’t give you hints. Don't worry, though, because I’ll show you the ropes on getting your grubby little hands on the Foul Invoker of Varshan.
Step 1: Complete the Storyline
The first step to getting your hands on the Foul Invoker of Varshan is to complete the Season 1 storyline. At the end of it all, you’ll confront Varshan together with Cormund. When you’ve slain Varshan, you’ll get a recipe called Invoker of Varshan which has a one-time use. You can craft the Invoker or Varshan using the following resources:
- 1 Demon’s Heart
- 1 Vicious Malignant Invoker
- 1 Brutal Malignant Invoker
- 1 Devious Malignant Invoker
All the Malignant Invokers can be crafted using Malignant Ichor, which can be found in dungeons, cellars, tunnels, and events. It can also be dismantled from Malignant Hearts. Meanwhile, the Demon’s Heart can be found by defeating demon enemies in cellars, dungeons, and overworlds.
Step 2: Look for A Gate
Then, go into a Malignant Tunnel on World Tier 1 or 2 and look for a gate with a padlock; it’s near the end of the run. Not all Malignant Tunnels you’ll encounter will have this gate in, but I know that two of them have the gates. I recommend going to the following:
- The Ravening Pit
- The Boiling Wounds
Complete the Malignant Tunnel as usual when inside, then open the gate. Using the Invoker of Varshan, fight Varshan again on the Monstrous Growth. This version of Varshan will be spawned at the appropriate level and use similar tactics to when you first encountered it in the storyline.
Step 3: Craft the Foul Invoker or Varshan
When you’ve defeated the boss, it’ll drop another recipe on the floor—this time, you’ll receive the recipe for the Foul Invoker of Varshan. You can now craft this item at the research stations, where you can use it on Monstrous Growths in World Tier 3 difficulty Malignant Tunnels and beyond.
You’ll need the following to craft the Foul Invoker of Varshan:
- 1 Invoker of Varshan
- 50 Sigil Powder
It’s worth noting that Sigil Powder is a resource that’s commonly acquired by dismantling Nightmare Sigils through the Occultist NPC. The only way for you to get Sigil Powder is by participating in a Nightmare Dungeon and fighting an echo boss. These can usually be found in endgame tiers, so caution is advised if your character is still under-leveled for the job.
You’ll take a while to farm up the necessary Sigils by running dungeons, but it’ll be worth it once you get your hands on the Foul Invoker of Varshan. You must complete a Tier 3 Nightmare Dungeon to unlock Sigil Crafting at the Occultist, so doing the dungeons is necessary.
The Most Difficult Version of Varshan
When you finally have the Foul Invoker of Varshan, you can head back to The Boiling Wound and beat this more challenging version of Varshan for better rewards. The Foul Vouker of Varshan yields a level 60 Varshan, but is it the most powerful? No. That’s where the Tormented Invoker of Varshan comes in.
The Tormented Invoker of Varshan summons the hardest version of the boss. You can only get the recipe by defeating the Foul Invoker. To craft the Tormented Invoker of Varshan, you’ll need:
- 1 Invoker of Varshan
- 5 Forgotten Souls
- 5 Fiend Roses
The Fiend Roses and Forgotten Souls can be obtained by exploring Helltide events and opening chests, so crafting the Tormented Invoker in the Nightmare World Tier is possible. However, you won’t be able to use the Tormented Invoker of Varshan in the Torment World Tier.
